Seven races are scheduled to take place Monday evening at Assiniboia Downs (ASD) and all but one is five furlongs in distance. The one outlier is the second race which is seven furlongs, and the field will have to do a complete lap of the track. Two carryovers are heading into Monday as well. The first is the $10,634 carryover in the ASD Jackpot Pick 5 which starts in the third race and runs to the seventh. For anyone new to horse racing, to win the Pick 5 wager you must correctly select the winner for five straight races. There is also a $12,484 Classic Hi-5 carryover in the sixth race which correctly picking the top five finishers is required to cash in.
A free program and other helpful resources can be found here.
Don’t worry if you can’t make it to the track because you can watch ASD’s stream live here.
Best Bet
East Rand (Denman) has been racing mile-long races already this year so he should be primed for the seven furlongs in the second race of the night. He finished second five times in six starts this year and also has a win. East Rand moves up to ASD from Turf Paradise in Arizona. Jared Brown could very well get his first training win of 2024 with this nine-year-old gelding.
Longshot Watch
At 5/1 morning line odds, Finalize (Freud) has a good chance to upset the first race. The five-year-old gelding is making his season debut as he is coming off a great 2023 where he finished in the top three nine times in 11 starts. However, he only had one win and he led for the entire six-furlong dash. His lines show he can lead or come from the back of the pack. Renaldo Cumberbatch will climb aboard once again for trainer Shelly Brown.
Another horse that has a good chance of upsetting the field at 5/1 on Monday is Doublebarreldelite (Going Commando) and she will have her chance in the fifth race. The four-year-old filly is also making her season debut and she has a solid record to protect. She has 11 top-three finishes in 12 career starts. However, she only has two wins to her name despite always being near the top. One of her wins was at 5 ½ furlongs so she can certainly manage the shorter distance races.
Jockey Focus
After the two days of racing, Damario Bynoe and Prayven Badrie lead with three wins each. Badrie has a slightly better win percentage of 33% win he only had nine mounts last week. Bynoe’s win percentage is at 27% due to him having 11 starts. Each jockey has a relatively quiet Monday night as Badrie is only scheduled for two drives and Bynoe will have three.
Antonio Whitehall has made the most appearances so far this meet at ASD with 12, but he has yet to earn a trip to the winner’s circle. Whitehall will be featured in all, but all but one race Monday night and he is aboard several top contenders.
